USA September 8, 2005 International Day of Action against Hewlett Packard Job Cuts and Pension cutbacks!
In solidarity with HP workers in the United States, Europe and around the world, the Communications Workers of America stands with HP workers as they confront corporate greed! HP has shown its true colors to its employees by slashing employee pension benefits and jobs while increasing the company’s Executive Council from seven to ten. The company has also added a CIO with a wage package of $15.3 million. In addition, Black Box employees who are CWA Local 9423 members who do the telecommunications work at Hewlett-Packard, have not received a raise in years. This is due to the low road approach the company now utilizes-the cheapest way is now the HP way! Mark Hurd, CEO and upper management actions do not hurt fat-pocket executives or their golf buddies placed on the board of directors. This is a sign of more to come-these large-scale enterprises such as H-P and IBM, they're the industry standard. Other companies are now going to be able to say, 'Our competitors are doing it, so now we have to do it.' Supposedly, HP supports and respects the protection of international human rights within the sphere of their influence, and ensures that they are not complicit in human rights abuses. Maybe HP should add corporate greed to the list of worker protections! CEO Hurd said in a conference call that the changes are intended to "make us simpler, nimbler and quicker." But at whose expense? We say – No to pension changes! No to job-cuts! No to health care changes! HPI is restarting the activity, after summer’s holidays, announcing 14.500 worldwide job cuts (last July announcement)
HP Corporate will cascade those cutting to Emea and countries level, to Italy as well in spite of all assurances done by Italian management to employees.
Worker’s Councils has been already engaged as follow:
1)EWC (European Work Council) representatives will have an extraordinary meeting on September 7th ,8th,9th at Brussels site where the EMEA management will present the implementation on new strategies, the new organizational model and the impact for EMEA/countries of the announcement
2) Next September 26th a meeting among Work Council/Trade Unions, HPI management and their representatives, to discuss on renewal of Internal National Agreement and the new organizational model
The Italian Work Council had already declared his opposition to this kind of action. Our position is: HP needs to reinvest on research, education, increasing professional figures , and in business innovations.
Local Work Council wants to have a really and serious discussion to recognise to employees their rights to employement and to avoid that cost control will be done reducing the number of people.
Before reducing people, HP should consider the saving into different areas: wasting money , reviewing processes.
We call all workers to work close with Work Council to discuss the daily evolution and decide together the necessaries actions to be taken to upfront the actual situation.
ITALIAN WORK COUNCIL HPI TRADE UNIONS REPRESENTATIVES
Your unions are very worried about figures which will be announced to the European Work Council on next September 8th and 9th.
Two days before the European Work Council, the analysis of our 5 unions converges : we’re expecting the worse scenario ; It is between 20 % and 30 % of the workforce which could be slashed.
This scenario is not the exclusivity of France, the other major countries in Europe would be strongly impacted as well.
The unions of HP denounce this scandalous plan of the American and European management impacting mainly France and Western Europe.
We are going to unite our forces with the French, European and worldwide unions, and we will do all our possible to decrease the number of job losses.
We are worried on the future of the company and we need your support and your mobilization to minimise the impact of the plan.
In Silicon Valley today we had a lively demonstration at the main entrance to the HP Cupertino main location. The group from CWA Local 9423 was received by many HP workers with thumbs up hand signs when they read our signs which read ' No to job cuts! No to Pension Cuts! Yes to Black Box Raise!' HP Security forces also were closely monitoring our activities and we held our ground for 90 minutes as we leafleted the main entrance.
News from HP France Union We want to communicate our last counting which shows that about 1850 have stopped work in HP France today at 11:00 am.
The action is relayed to the media. Contacts with political leaders have been taken as well.
The employees of HP Italy, our colleagues from the CWA union, and the employees of IBM Germany, who stand in solidarity with HP workers in Europe and around the world in our protest and fight against the restructuring plan of the HP Corporation, have been strongly applauded.

40% of french employees (1850) have stopped working during one hour, without even knowing the exact number of job cuts in their country.
